My music is grounded in traditional jazz techniques, while deeply influenced by the free jazz spirit led by Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor in the 1960s, as well as John Coltrane’s improvisational work after Ascension. I aim to maximize the possibilities of improvisation, placing musical freedom at the core of my work, exploring unpredictable flows of sound.
The music of ECM label artists, represented by Jan Garbarek in the 1970s, plays an important role in my expression. Their approach, which integrates elements of modern classical music, the serenity of Scandinavian landscapes, and various ethnic musical traditions, resonates with the musical fusion I pursue. In recent years, I’ve been strongly drawn to Balkan music, whose complex rhythms, odd time signatures, and unique melodic lines have added new layers to my improvisation.
Additionally, I am deeply influenced by visual arts. My background in fine arts, particularly minimalism and the Japanese Mono-ha movement, is deeply embedded in my music. The geometric simplicity of Donald Judd, and the emphasis on the presence of “things themselves” pursued by Mono-ha artists such as Lee Ufan and Kishio Suga, align with my musical philosophy of stripping away unnecessary elements and focusing on the essence of sound.
My music is an attempt to merge these different cultural and artistic influences, finding a place where tradition and innovation intersect. Through improvisation, I aim to capture and depict spontaneous emotions and energy, creating a direct dialogue with the listener.
